Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, Milton Dick and Kennedy MP Bob Katter were special guests at the Charters Towers private school, Blackheath and Thornburgh College (BTC) promoting political knowledge in outback Queensland.

The collaboration from the two goliaths in Australian politics for BTC was due to the Parliament in Schools program.

Mr Dick said the program was an initiative to educate students in the structure of Australia’s political system, regardless of their location.

"Canberra is Australia’s centre of democracy – but not all Australian students will have the privilege of visiting," he said.

"One of my biggest priorities is to increase the accessibility of civics education.

"What makes the Parliament in Schools program so successful, is the great teamwork with fellow Members of Parliament, the excellent support by the PEO and participation by such enthusiastic and engaged students."

Mr Katter has described the visit, where students were able to engage in a “Question Time” with the two MPs as an “important part of democracy.”
