State MP Robbie Katter and Deputy Mayor Graham Lohmann participated in the grand opening of “The World” at commercial precinct Gold Tower alongside the project’s Executive Director Paul McIver.

Paul McIver said the newly opened attraction of a giant stainless steel globe was a gesture for the town’s 150 year celebrations.

“Because Charters Towers was known as ‘The World,’ I just thought I wanted to bring something together that would be good for the 150 years,” he said.

“Because it's made out of stainless steel, it will last.”

Mr McIver said the new attraction is a big opportunity for tourism in town.

“It’s just a ‘wow’ item that isn’t anywhere, because it's only one of a kind,” he said.

“And then at the same time it brings all the history together like around the base, we've got eight stories of Charters Towers around the base.”

There is a QR check in at the attraction so tourists and locals alike can register that they’ve witnessed “The World.”

Mr McIver said the Commercial Precinct is currently aiming for 100,000 visitors.

“We want to get to 100,000 visitors from around the world who have visited ‘The World’,” he said.
